What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the same biological building blocks that form proteins.
Many peptides occur naturally in the human body and act as chemical messengers, helping cells and biological systems communicate with one another. Different peptides interact with different receptors and pathways, which means their functions can vary considerably.

The term “peptide” describes a type of molecule. It does not, by itself, establish that a product is effective, safe, authorised or suitable for medical use.

Each peptide-based intervention must be assessed according to:

Its specific identity and mechanism
The condition or objective being considered
The quality and relevance of the evidence
Its regulatory and authorisation status
Product quality and manufacturing controls
Potential benefits and limitations
Known and potential risks
Interactions and contraindications
Appropriate dosing and monitoring requirements

How Peptide Medicines Work

Small Molecules. Specific Biological Pathways.

Peptides can bind to receptors on or within cells and influence particular biological signals.
Depending on the specific peptide, these signals may relate to areas such as hormone regulation, glucose metabolism, appetite, digestion or other physiological processes.

However, peptides are not interchangeable. Evidence relating to one peptide, formulation or medical indication cannot automatically be applied to another.

A responsible medical assessment therefore begins with the individual product and its intended clinical use—not with general claims about “peptide therapy.”

Two people with similar goals may have very different medical histories, biological profiles, risk factors and treatment needs.

Evidence and Regulatory Status

Not Every Peptide Has the Same Status

Some peptide-based medicines have been authorised for specific indications following regulatory assessment. Other peptides may be used only in research, remain under clinical investigation or have no authorisation for human treatment.

“Used by a clinic,” “available online” or “described in scientific research” does not necessarily mean that a product is authorised, proven effective or appropriate for an individual patient.
